Free litigation calculator

Legal Deadline & Date Calculator

Add or subtract calendar days or Monday–Friday business days, move weekend results when needed, and count calendar or weekday intervals between two dates.

Evergreen calculation tool

Enter the terms that apply to your matter. This tool does not choose a jurisdiction-specific rule, legal rate, fee schedule or court calendar for you.

Need a litigation term explained before you calculate? The Litigation Glossary gives plain-English definitions for calendar days, business days, trigger dates, and weekend adjustments, plus related settlement and deadline terminology.

Add or subtract days from a legal date

Enter the starting date, choose whether to add or subtract days, select calendar days or Monday–Friday business days, and choose whether the start date counts. An optional weekend adjustment can move a final Saturday or Sunday to Friday or Monday.

Count days between two dates

The second calculator reports both calendar-day and Monday–Friday weekday counts between two entered dates. This is useful for checking elapsed time, response windows, notice periods and other date calculations when the governing rule has already been identified.

Why court holidays are not removed automatically

Holiday schedules and deadline-extension rules differ by court, agency and jurisdiction and can change. This evergreen calculator intentionally excludes only Saturdays and Sundays in business-day mode. Confirm holidays and any special counting rule separately before relying on a deadline.

Use the governing rule before using the calculator

The calculator performs date arithmetic; it does not determine when a period begins, whether service adds time, whether a particular day is excluded, or what happens when a deadline falls on a holiday. If a judgment amount also requires interest through a particular date, use the Judgment Interest Calculator after confirming the applicable rate and dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days include every day. In this calculator, business days include Monday through Friday and exclude Saturdays and Sundays.

Does the legal deadline calculator exclude court or federal holidays?

No. Business-day mode excludes weekends only. Court, federal, state, local and agency holidays must be checked separately.

Can I include the start date in the count?

Yes. The calculator lets you choose whether the start date is included or excluded when adding or subtracting days.

What happens if the calculated date falls on a weekend?

You can leave the date unchanged, move it forward to Monday or move it backward to Friday. Which option is legally correct depends on the governing rule.

Can the calculator tell me which procedural rule applies?

No. It only performs date arithmetic using the selections you enter. You must first determine the controlling rule, triggering event, service rule and holiday treatment.

Can I count the number of days between two dates?

Yes. The page includes a second calculator that reports calendar days and Monday–Friday weekday counts between two entered dates.
