What Form 5558 can extend

Form 5558 can request additional time for Form 5500, Form 5500-SF, Form 5500-EZ and Form 8955-SSA, subject to the current instructions.

How much extra time

The current form generally allows an extension no later than the 15th day of the third month after the normal due date. The exact requested date belongs on the form.

When to file

The extension request must be filed on or before the normal due date of the return/report for which the extension is requested.

Electronic filing

Beginning January 1, 2025, the IRS states that Form 5558 may be filed electronically through EFAST2 or filed on paper with the IRS. Confirm the current method and instructions for the filing year.
